Rock Art Retreat—A gorgeous estate full of petroglyphs and colorful artwork. | House in Taos

3 Bedroom House in Taos
This sprawling adobe home is surrounded by hundreds of acres of undeveloped land. It was built in the early 1800s by Spanish settlers and over time has been stunningly remodeled. Quixote’s Canyon is named as an homage to its Spanish history and the metal sculpture of famed Spanish literary character, Don
Quixote, (yes, the windmill fighting guy) who welcomes you at the entrance.
Enter through the time-weathered front gate up to the expansive flagstone patio complete with outdoor kiva fireplace. Turn around and take it all in. Taos lies in the distance surrounded by jaw-dropping mountain views. Pass through the hand-carved wooden front doors with hand-hammered wrought iron hardware to enter a different world.
The Living Room (aka Frida’s Room)
Turquoise velvet swivel chairs and leather couches provide comfortable seating in the living room overlooking the Sangre de Cristo range. Snuggle in with a book on the long chaise by the entry or take your perch on the saffron leather chair with copper lamp and embroidered ottoman. Radiant-heat rises through wide-plank pine wood flooring and the Taos sun streams through the window. Please take extra care of grandma’s wood tables and the needlework Frida pillows.
The Dining Room
A large wooden dining table with hand-carved chairs provides seating for six. The walls are warmed by a Navajo rug, a copper tray and photos: kachina dolls from our collection and Anasazi petroglyphs from the rock formation outside.
The Kitchen
More petroglyph images in the kitchen! Panels on the cabinet doors are studded with Taos blue stones and painted with petroglyphs in honor of the drawings on the rock escarpment outside. Brand-new stainless steel appliances and stone countertops make cooking in this well-appointed recently renovated kitchen really fun. Whip up some Keurig coffee in the "coffee niche" then take a seat at the oak kitchen table that seats four. The large blue-toned painting on the wall is done by a well-known Taos artist who lived in this house for decades, one of just a few owners of this historically significant property.
The Sitting Room
Through the hand-carved doors toward the master suite, find an intimate sitting room with a leather couch and chair as well as a SMART TV and console desk overlooking the front patio. This room is an ideal private workspace for everything from trainings and web conferences to work on your novel or sketch diary.
King Bedroom Suite
A Cal-King bed appointed with sumptuous sheets and duvet comforter nestles into a cave-like space framed by low-hanging ‘vigas’ logs. Gilded bird lamps rest on the bedside tables. The leather armchair is an elegant place to relax.
Deep inside the king suite bathroom, you’ll find a cave-like shower stall with granite bench, hand-held shower and luxurious towels, as well as a TOTO washlet bidet.
The Guest Room Suite
Overlooking the portale gardens, the guest room is spacious and sunny. The king-size bed can be converted into two XL twin beds if requested at booking. The glass bedside lamps with pressed flower lampshades belonged to grandma. The jewel-tone painting on the wall is by the same Taos artist and former homeowner. Find a bench and a luggage rack in the closet.
The guest bath boasts one of the most luxurious bathtubs in all of Taos. This deep tub will delight even the most ski-or-hiking sore muscles. Whimsical purple cabinets and star-themed tiles in the tub surround provide an artistic Taos experience in this stunning just-renovated bathroom
The Den
Climb the red stone stairs passing the door to the private portale garden. At the top, you’ll find the media den with red Navajo rugs, game table, books and a large SMART TV. The couch is a pull-out queen bed. On this upper level there’s a third full bath with a traditional tin mirror and a shower stall.
The Portale Garden and Hot Tub
Through the door on the stairwell landing, head outside to the twinkling portale porch where you’ll find a couch, a butcher block table and an outdoor grill. Follow the flagstone path to the corner of the garden for a dip in the hot tub. For everyone’s safety, please shower before jumping in.
Guest access
Guests will have access to the entire house with the exception of an upstairs owner's room and a couple of cabinets in the kitchen.
