Local Restaurants
There are so many but here are some we like. For more fine dining we would recommend the Lion and Pheasant which are located in town or Hencote has a beautiful view over the town. Italian - La Dolce Vita or Osteria Da Paolo. For a good curry The Curry House or Avatar. Pizza - Dough & Oil. The Istanbul Restaurant has a wide selection of charcoal grills. Momo's Noodle Bar is nice. The Olive tree or Casa Naranjo for Tapas. House of the Rising Sun and The Armoury are always firm favourites, along with Cote. And not forgetting The Boat House, which has a great outdoor space and overlooks the river. Number Four does a great brunch. We also like Hickory's and have a Nando's and a Harvester near the cinema There are also many cafes, in the town, at the back of the Square we like the more traditional Gallery tea room. Or Ginger & Co, where you can watch the world go by. Delivery and Takeaway: Just Eat, Deliveroo and Zoom services are available. Don’t forget to check out the local Market Hall, where you can eat, drink and shop for local produce.
Local Attractions
A few minutes walk along the river is the Weir Cafe beside the river Severn and weir. There is outdoor seating and a children's play area. It has got a field with goats, geese and turkeys and is a very peaceful location.
Following the footpath along the river Severn is a joy, either into town and through the Quarry or the the other way into the countryside.
Shrewsbury Castle (3 minutes walk) is home to spectacular collections of pictures, weapons, uniforms and other memorabilia from the 1700's to the present day, found in the Shropshire Regimental Museum inside the castle.\
Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery Look out for temporary exhibitions by cutting edge artists, Roman artefacts, many discovered at nearby Wroxeter, and work inspired by Charles Darwin who was born in the town. The Museum also has a permanant exhibition of pre-history and a roman gallery.
Two minutes walk away is Shrewsbury Prison, built in 1868. The prison was decommissioned by the Ministry of Justice in 2013 and is now open to the public as a tourist attraction offering a variety of tours including guided and self guided. The guided tours are led by ex prison officers who showcase just what life was like, day and night, for prisoners, officers and visitors. During the two hours they shine a light on what really happened, from the Victorians to the 21st century, behind the high prison walls.
In town is The Quarry, a beautiful, 29-acre parkland, encircled by the majestic loop of the river Severn. The Quarry has been Shrewsbury's most important site for recreation since the 16th Century. It still provides the perfect place to relax, enjoy walks, picnic, fish along the banks of the River Severn, or just let off steam.
At the heart of the Quarry lies the Dingle, a floral masterpiece cultivated by world renowned gardener Percy Thrower, who served as Parks Superintendent for 28 years. Its a delightful sunken garden landscaped with alpine borders, brilliant bedding plants, shrubbery and charming water features.
