The Space:
Aloha! The Makani A Kai is a beautifully landscaped, intimate resort in Ma'alaea, Maui with only 24 units, and one of only two complexes at the end of Hauoli Street that have full beach-front access to the beautiful Sugar Beach- 3 miles of sandy, secluded beach. The beach is only steps away from this bright spacious 2nd floor, single-story condo, with lovely views of Ma'alaea Bay, Haleakala (dormant 10,000 foot volcano), West Maui mountains, and family-friendly Haycraft Park.
This condo is conveniently located within walking distance to the beach, grassy park, restaurants, shopping, and boating at the Ma'alaea Harbor. The fully-stocked gourmet kitchen and outdoor seaside and poolside bbq area make it easy and fun to prepare meals at home.
Maalaea is quiet and non-touristy, yet central to everything, with fantastic trade winds that keep the temperature just right. Watch green sea turtles pop up for air, surf the waves, and sun themselves on the beach. From November to April, you will have front row seats to whales breaching and slapping their tails and fins as they enjoy the calm, warm, shallow waters of the bay while giving birth and nursing their young! During the summer, with a good south swell, you can see surfers flocking to the legendary surf break "Freight Trains", the world's fastest surfable wave.

There is a private balcony, saltwater pool, 2 Weber BBQs, and lounge chairs on the spacious lawn running parallel to the beach just steps from your front door. Free on site parking and shared laundry facilities as well as an in-unit full-size washer and dryer. All new double paned windows and insulated walls along with central air conditioning in every room creates a cool, tranquil retreat year round.
A desk and chair in each bedroom make this the perfect destination for remote work and / or school with at least 3 separate work spaces (not including the balcony with dining table, chairs, and outdoor sofa- perfect for watching the sunrise.)
Guest Access:
Guests will have access to the entire condo except for the loft area / owner's closets / cabinets which are used for storage. The beautifully manicured grounds are open to guests as well as the beachfront pool, beachfront BBQ / dining patio, and lawn chairs.
The Neighborhood:
Maalaea is perfectly centrally located and a wonderful base for exploring the island. Makani A Kai is directly located on a beautiful, relatively undiscovered 3-mile sandy beach, and feels much less touristy and busy compared to Kihei, Wailea, Kaanapali, or Napili. It is reminiscent of how those beaches were 20-30 years ago. The condo is located at the end of a cul-de-sac adjacent to and overlooking a small state park with partial ocean and mountain views. Occasionally locals camp on the beach as they have for hundreds of years on many of the beautiful beaches around Maui. There are several restaurants, markets, and shops just a short walk (10 minutes) or drive (2 minutes) down the road. Maalaea is also home to the Maui Ocean Center aquarium and the harbor where many snorkeling and sunset boat trips depart.
Getting Around:
While off the beaten tourist path, we are very conveniently located. Costco, Whole Foods, Kahului Airport, and Kihei are an easy 15-20 minute drive. Lahaina and Wailea are about 30 minutes away. Kaanapali/Napili about 40. You could happily spend all your time on the beach by the condo, and there is Maui Bus service or Uber available. But Maui has so many wonderful places to explore, that most people opt to rent a car to really experience the beauty and diversity of Maui on their own. One unassigned parking spot is included as well as plentiful street parking.
Other Things to Note:
1 king, 2 full (double) beds (bunked), 1 full (double) air bed mattress in living room and large sectional couch.
There is a $50 / person / night charge for additional guests over 4 to cover increased wear, cleaning, and usage.
10.25% TA and 4.5% GE and 3% Maui County tax visibly passed on and included in quote (These taxes are required for all temporary lodging in Maui. Most hotels and condominiums do not include these taxes in their rates-- adding them to your bill when you check out. Many also charge extra for parking, resort fees, etc. In contrast, everything is included in our quotes.)
The built-in icemaker of the refrigerator does not work, but there are several refillable ice trays provided.
Interaction with Guests:
We are available via phone, email, or text and happy to answer any questions you have before, during, or after your stay. Prior to your stay, we will provide you with a unique door code, so there is no need to pick up a key and late arrivals are no problem. If needed, we have multiple on-island contacts to assist you in person.
