3 Bedroom House in Mendocino
Relax with the family in this newly built, light-filled home, a 5-minute walk from a stunning ocean lookout. An acre of space is all yours -- with basketball, soccer field, and trampoline for the kiddos; a cedar hot tub, sun-drenched patio, forested sitting area, and deep-soak-bathtub for grown-ups in need of renewal. This cozy yet spacious gem offers both retreat and expansion, privacy and connection, whether for a holiday gathering or a weekend to reclaim each other, free from distraction.
Our home was built in 2019 and landscaped in 2020. I designed our 1100 square feet with a minimalist spirit, to maximize quality time and connection to nature. If you're coming to Mendocino to reconnect with the simpler joys of life, this space will support your desire.
This home has been my work of art and labor of love since its inception -- from sketching the floor-plan to selecting its finishes, from homeschooling our son through the pandemic to now welcoming other busy families and groups of friends to unwind and play together.
This sunny corner acre sits near the entrance of a quiet & friendly neighborhood, situated between Point Cabrillo Lighthouse and Russian Gulch State Park. Mendocino Village and Big River Beach are a 5-minute drive south, Caspar Beach a 5-minute drive north, making access to the best of Mendocino a breeze.
The open concept floor plan is bathed in natural light from 3 directions and faces south to enjoy full-day sun -- very important in chilly Mendocino! The warm maple floors and cabinets contrast the clean whites and ocean tones throughout. Instead of framed art, the abundant windows provide an ever-changing landscape to gaze at -- forest-bathing from the comfort of your home :)
While 5 people will sleep easily in the 3 cozy bedrooms, a queen-size folding Caspar mattress in the detached studio / office welcomes those who don't need a midnight trip to the bathroom!
The full kitchen enables you to cook as you would at home, or to keep it simple and enjoy a frozen pizza and a glass of wine. An additional kitchen table can be assembled for extra seating or for a more formal holiday dinner.
We designed our home as a family retreat and eventual retirement destination, but the pandemic changed those plans! We spent a blissful 3 years living in our perfect home before returning to "civilization." Now we are delighted to think of other busy families and couples detoxing from daily burdens in the soothing surrounds we now think of as heaven.
You'll have the entire property to yourself, including the detached studio, which allows for focused work, quiet meditation, or an extra sleeping space -- an ideal retreat for any reluctant teens in tow. This space enjoys radiant floor heating and is warmed as well by tall windows and skylights.
Take full advantage of the easy outdoor play spaces to get some quality time with the kids and your inner child. Just open the outdoor ball storage bin and you'll find an assortment of sports equipment to get the competitive juices flowing.
In the far corner near the tree line is our cedar wood hot tub, which comfortably accommodates 4 adults. It's the perfect place to star-gaze and enjoy a long conversation while the kids are inside sleeping or watching a movie.
Speaking of movies, while we intentionally chose not to have a TV in the house, movie night is a sacred event! You will find a streaming projector & instructions to transform the living room into a home theater. Just rotate the couch, drag out some pillows and twin mattresses for cozy floor seating, and stream your selection onto the giant blank living room wall. (Air-popper and popcorn kernels in the cupboard.)
Important notes to disclose:
Our home has welcomed many children and babies, but it is definitely not baby-proofed. Please be cautious around the wood-burning stove, fire pit, furniture corners, patios, etc. If darkness is required for a good night's sleep, set up your little one in the middle bedroom (full size bed) where you can easily use our blackout curtain on the single window to maximize darkness.
Our family is allergic to cats but happily discovered hypoallergenic Siberian cats to have no effect on us. The house has been deep-cleaned, but if you have fears of a reaction to our living room cat tree or carpets, please know this ahead of time.
Our Japanese-style cedar hot tub is chlorine-free and treated with eco-friendly methods. You can read more about this process at the Northern Lights Cedar Tubs site.
Also note that poison oak can grow in some areas of the property, mainly on our septic system's leech field, just behind the hot tub's privacy shrubs. Best to keep sports & games on our soccer field, which is flatter for running anyway!
